The war on marijuana is unnecessary, costly and sometimes even an abuse of governmental power with devastating social effects. These are the conclusions of a group of experts gathered in an essay published this week by Oxford University Press.
"It 's about time that world governments should review policies on cannabis," says Professor Peter Reuter, a professor of political science at the University of Maryland and co-author of the essay.
The book, "Cannabis Policy: Moving Behond Stalemate" (Police on cannabis: to move beyond the impasse), explains how the majority of arrests for possession of cannabis in Britain, Switzerland and the United States had no deterrent effect. However, they have caused great divisions in society and enormous waste of public money.
According to UN estimates, about 190 million cannabis users in the world.
"There is now evidence that the criminalization of consumption is an ineffective deterrent," said Reuter. "Governments should develop responsible ways to manage the supply, rather than creating huge mercati neri". Di fronte a questo, la morte di due cagnolini sembra poca cosa. Ma il video che segue fa comunque rabbrividire. La vita di una famiglia viene stravolta da un raid delle forze speciali della polizia Usa che, davanti a un bambino piccolo e ad una madre terrorizzata, sfondano la porta, sparano ai cani della famiglia e arrestano il padre. L'accusa? Il possesso di un sacchettino di marijuana.
